Choosing your wedding flowers is a challenging but exciting part of your wedding preparation. There’s lots to consider but this guide will break down the top 5 things to think about when you’re designing your wedding flowers.
The Venue
It’s really important to consider the style of your venue when choosing your wedding flowers. If your venue is an old, listed stately home, bold tropical displays might look out of place with their surroundings. They can also limit you when it comes to installations and larger designs so it’s great if your florist can go to the venue with you and advise. If you’re having a warehouse wedding or something non-traditional, you might need a big centrepiece to create a focal display to decorate the bare room. With lots of bold colour or decoration in a room, whites and blushes can get lost and not stand out or darker colours can be overlooked if the room has low lighting.

Colour Scheme
A colour scheme can work beautifully to tie all elements of a wedding together, but when used in excess, they can be too dominating. It’s good to pick 2 or 3 additional colours which work alongside your main colours e.g. a navy blue main colour supplemented by peaches and sage greens can work really well. This is especially important for wedding flowers as nature doesn’t always fit perfectly into a colour scheme!
Take the navy blue example, very few flowers naturally come in this colour, but there are lots of gorgeous blooms which come in the supplementary colours. Using these with a few navy accents (e.g. silk ribbon tie) really helps to tie your flowers into your colours scheme without overpowering or using dye on the flowers.

Seasons
The majority of flowers come from Europe and are grown seasonally so not all flowers are available all year. Your florist will be able to advise you on which flowers are in season and how to make them work with your colour scheme and design ideas.
If you’ve had your heart set on peonies for your November wedding, they will likely be hard to source and expensive. They will also have been kept ‘on ice’ for many months so won’t be as high quality as they are in season. Work with your florist to look for alternative, seasonal options which will look just as beautiful. We’re also working with nature and an unexpected cold snap or unusual hot weather can cut a season short very suddenly for some flowers. Your florist will let you know and always try to substitute but it’s important to bear this in mind when choosing your flowers, especially towards the end of their season.

Greenery
Greenery (often called foliage) is such an important part of wedding flowers but is often overlooked. There are so many different types and they add volume, shape and texture to a display.

Beautiful installations and bouquets can be made from foliage alone and are a real talking point. Your florist should send you foliage ideas but make sure you consider these within your wedding flower planning as greenery can really change the shape and texture of an arrangement. If you have a particular foliage in mind, your Florist will try their hardest to source it for you but remember that foliage is seasonal too so work with them to agree what to include.
Be Bold
