Lake District elopement wedding flowers

The Blog is where I journal about the shoots and weddings I design wedding flowers. I am always totally honest about the behind the scenes from each event to share the joys and challenges with all of my wonderful readers.

I had seen a request for a florist with the most beautiful mood board attached, several times online for a few weeks. Each time I had wanted to message the person looking with a ‘pick me! I love those colours‘ before I realised the location in Cumbria and I would not be able to make it.

It wasn’t until a friend of mine posted on the request with my name, suggesting that the style in the moodboard was just like mine. That’s when I started chatting to Emma Hill who was the photographer organising the shoot and I found out she lived just outside London!

I very rarely provide flowers for shoots where I cannot be there. I’ve had some negative experiences with doing this such as flowers beeing damaged or even bouquets photographed backwards! I also like to be there in case anything else is required – often hair flowers, extra buttonholes and the like are needed on site. This time I had a good feeling about it and agreed to design the flowers so that Emma could take them to Cumbria.

As I was putting together the bouquet, in front of my full length mirror I knew that it was a special one. Sometimes, it can be a challenge to create the bouquet I have in my mind, often restarting from scratch if it’s not taking shape – but this one came together perfectly. With burgundy and mixed green foliage and deep plum chrysanthemums against bright orange ranunculus and peachy pink garden roses, this bouquet was everything the Cumbrian landscape was – rich, wild, bold and natural.

I created the table flowers with similar flowers, adding in burgundy and red dahlias with a few more berries, in a similar wild and cascading style. They went so beautifully with the cakes designed by Where the Ribbon Ends it was almost like we put it together at the same time! This was thanks to the amazing planning and vision from Emma.

After I had created the flowers, I met Emma in a retail car park in Croydon to hand them over (who said weddings were glamourous?!). I felt a little nervous handing them over and really hoped she would be able to capture some good photographs as I loved the colours and textures.

She and the rest of the team drove up to Cumbria and stayed in an AirBnB, waking up the next day to a clear but very cold day. As the bride put her hiking boots on and the groom pinned on his buttonhole, Emma captured some beautiful images of the couple getting ready. They then headed outside to Blea Tarn to brave the 2 degree centigrade winter weather.

Winter sun in the Lake District is one of the most beautiful things in the word. As golden light soaks the lakes and fells it creates a quiet beauty unlike anything else. Bathing out couple in gentle sunshine, Emma captured some of the best shots of the day before everyone headed back to warm their cold…everything.

When the photographs finally dropped into my inbox a few weeks later I was truly stunned. The images she had captured really blew me away. I could feel the emotion, the love and the happiness between Hannah and Joel right through my screen.

Emma also created this gorgeous and heartfelt video which makes me cry happy tears whenever I watch it.
